School accounts versus self-serve parents

Onboarding behaviour splits hard between institution-managed logins and parent-bought seats — treat them as different journeys.

Aggregate onboarding charts hide a structural split. School-managed accounts often clear setup because a teacher or IT coordinator pushes the first session. Parent-bought seats stumble on permissions, payment confirmations, and placement tests taken after dinner.

If your educational app serves both, your first-week learning journey is not one funnel. Segment early. Otherwise growth will “optimise” steps that only parents see, while school cohorts look artificially healthy.

In Malaysia’s mixed deployment landscape — ministry pilots, private schools, tuition centres, and direct-to-family apps — this split is ordinary. Our Onboarding Funnel Review always asks for the account-type dimension before drawing conclusions.
